This sounds like the bug I came across (confirmed by Newtek)

If you save a scene file with the Anim type set to anyhing but
"none" the program will crash when you render or try to change the
anim type. Apparently all versions are affected, including Amiga
according to the NT tech support.

You'll have to edit the scene file in a text editor to fix it.
